Students this summer are spending time reading for pleasure and fulfilling school assignments. A great strategy to strengthen your reader’s comprehension is to encourage active reading. As your student learns, encourage him or her to read actively.
What is active reading?
Active readers ask questions as they read. One way to encourage this is to develop a writing journal. Readers may begin their entry with a question or a response such as, “I wonder why…”, or, I noticed…”. Another solution is to encourage your reader to create his or her own questions or responses. Remember, strong readers are active readers!
